The Union of Catholic Mothers (UCM) is a National organisation which operates at National, Diocesan and Parish levels. The Birmingham Diocese is divided into three Sections; we come under Wolverhampton and are one of eight parishes in the Section which have UCM. Membership is open to ALL women who uphold the belief of the Sanctity of marriage.
We support each other with prayer and friendship and have a variety of Social and Spiritual occasions with other foundations in the Section and Diocese. We also support various charities. We pray for Vocations to Priesthood and Religious Life. We meet every two weeks on Wednesday evenings (7.00 - 8-30 pm) in the Parish Centre. Mass is available prior to the meeting at 6:30pm. During the homily, Bishop Alan reflected on faith since it was the Feast Day of Saint Thomas. He reflected on ’Doubting Thomas’’ profession of faith: ‘My Lord and my God’ (John 20:28) and called St. Thomas an ‘imperfect disciple’. We too are imperfect disciples in an imperfect world but we can turn our imperfections to perfection, as St. Thomas did, through God’s grace. After Mass we had time for private prayers and a visit to the Slipper Chapel. At 2pm there was a solemn silent procession from the Slipper Chapel to the old Abbey Grounds and the site of the ‘Holy House’. Richeldis de Faverches, in 1061, had a vision of Mary who told her to build the home where the Angel Gabriel visited Mary at the Annunciation. The ‘Holy House’ and Abbey were destroyed by Henry VIII in 1538. The UCM from the different dioceses in England were welcomed with their banners as their prayer intentions were mentioned. The unity of our faith as Catholics was shown in these prayers: how pleasant and lovely it is for brothers to dwell together in love (Ps 133 1). The Statue of Our Lady of Walsingham was welcomed and the President of the UCM Margaret McDonald asked those present to use their talents: “Motherhood is a call to service”. The pilgrimage concluded with Benediction and the blessing of the sick and all present. Everyone went home happy and fulfilled. We stopped for evening meal and got back safely for 11:00pm. It was a lovely honour given to Our Lady and Walsingham will be rededicated in 2020. Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for us.” Sister Jacinta IHM |
