Parish Ministry
The Eucharist is the centre of all that the Church does. At the heart of the Mass is the real presence of the crucified, risen and glorified Lord, who continues His saving work among us. Within the Church an acolyte is instituted to serve at the altar and assist the priest and deacon. The lector is instituted to proclaim Sacred Scripture.
In the absence of instituted acolytes, lay minsters may be deputed to serve at the Altar as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and in the absence of an instituted lector, lay ministers may be commissioned as Ministers of the Word.

Lay persons who proclaim Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel which is reserved for the priest who stands in the place of Jesus, should be suited to perform this function and require careful preparation so that the faithful, by listening to the readings may develop a warm and living love for Sacred Scripture.

Bishops, priests and deacons are the ordinary ministers of Communion. If a large number of people are to receive Communion, the ordinary minsters may need assistance. That is, in extraordinary circumstances lay persons may be deputed to assist in distributing Communion. This is especially the case when Communion is under both kinds. Extraordinary Ministers may be formally commissioned for a period of time after instruction of their responsibilities or deputed for a particular occasion. In addition, extraordinary ministers may take Communion to the sick.
